Evinar ? A Google Hangouts For Facebook That Broadcasts Anything (Except The Audience)

Evinar ScreenshotWith Evinar, you can't bring audience members onto a live streaming stage with you, but you can broadcast anything else. Evinar is a new Facebook Page app launching today via TechCrunch that lets you stream to a live audience nearly nearly any type of content,?including YouTube, Ustream, Hulu, Facebook photos, Flickr, SlideShare, tweets, or uploaded text and images. Evinar definitely lacks interactivity. You can't collaborate or video chat with the first 10 viewers like on Hangouts, or pipe in the webcam streams of any audience member like promising startup OnTheAir. Plus you can't stream your own webcam directly. Still, web celebs and thought leaders could use Evinar to connect with their fans in more ways than a standard video stream.

From Freeways to Fjords: How To Have A Long Distance Relationship

Sometimes before I fall asleep at night I wonder how it is that I ended up sleeping next to the guy I call my husband.

How did we get here?? How did we make it through 2.5 years of a long distance relationship and have a good outcome??

This isn't a 'how-to' guide, this was just our experience.

We pretty much started out long distance and unsure of what to expect.

We downloaded Skype, we video-chatted, we made expensive phone calls, and wrote expensive text messages.

There's a 9 hour time difference from California to Norway, so we made a plan to Skype everyday while I was on my lunch break at work, around the time when Stian was going to bed in Norway.

Each day I hauled my computer to work. I would leave the house with my arms too full and dropping things. I had my purse, a sweater, my lunch, my yellow travel mug holding my tea to drink while I commuted, my phone balancing on top of my mug, my breakfast often sliding around on a plate, and always my computer. I don't think I ever forgot it. It was an art just to get into my car.

I ate lunch in my car and made sure to park it as close to the internet router as possible (which was just outside the office) and hope there was a good connection that day. I would crawl into the backseat so I could sit with my feet hanging over the driver's seat, balance the computer on my shins, and eat my lunch while I found out about Stian's day.

Most days we were able to chat for the whole hour, many days we weren't. Sometimes we sat in silence - he read the news online, I checked my email and Facebook, read some jokes, and ate my lunch. On weekends, occasionally we would fall asleep while talking. We were "hanging out."

We counted down the days until we saw each other again. We were annoyed that we were doing this, and yet somehow compelled to continue.

We spent a lot of time in airports. We anticipated the greatest kisses in the world there, and experienced the most heart-wrenching goodbyes. I've cried too many tears in the airports of Bergen and Los Angeles, both happy and sad.

It was hard work, but the time we spent together (in the same country) made up for it. It kept us holding on until the next time we could see each other.

After a long stretch of not seeing each other for nearly 5 months, we vowed to NEVER let it go that long again. We realized that we could meet halfway between Norway and California for a quick weekend getaway, so we met in Washington, D.C., keeping just a month and a half between visits.

Long distance relationships are expensive, frustrating, and inconvenient.

On the other hand, you learn how to communicate better than you ever thought you knew how, you realize you can maintain independence and have a relationship at the same time, and you have a lot of time think things over and decide whether or not to follow your heart....no matter how far it might take you.

Business branding (and by business branding we mean the entire brand promise and experience, not just a name and a logo) is an undercurrent throughout Brainzooming blog content.? Defining Brand Strategy

Adjusting Your Brand Strategy

  • Bad Strategy and Economies of Scale?? It can seem like the right move to remove small elements of the brand experience when you have a scale-driven cost savings opportunity, but what?s the brand loyalty impact when customers notice?
  • Creative Thinking for Brand Extension Ideas?? Brand extensions can be tricky, but this simple strategic thinking exercise can help in thinking through how other brands? extension strategies can prompt new directions for your brand.
  • Untangling Your Brand Attributes for Greater Value?? Over time, brand attributes can become too bundled and undermine customer value perceptions. When that happens, it is time to rethink ways to deliver branding benefits and value.
  • Strategy in a Full House of Brands?? When you have acquired a whole array of brands through M&A activity, making them all fit into one house of brands can become crowded.

Deep-sea scientists cheer Cameron's dive

James Cameron's record-setting dive to Earth's deepest spot has sparked a wave of excitement among many in the science community, who are not only heralding the new technology produced by the Hollywood veteran but lauding the renewed focus the project has put on the deep ocean.

"It's wonderful, absolutely wonderful," said Robert J. Stern, a geoscientist at the University of Texas at Dallas. He is one of several deep-sea researchers who said they'd been closely following Cameron's bid to return human observers to the Challenger Deep, a trough within the Mariana Trench more than 35,000 feet (10,700 meters) below the ocean surface.

Cameron's roundtrip earlier this week to the deepest place on Earth lasted just under seven hours. The only previous time humans visited this spot was in 1960.

News of Cameron's successful solo dive "gave me goose bumps," said Cindy Lee Van Dover, director of the marine laboratory at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment.

"I think it's a really good thing," said Bruce Robison, a senior scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California. [ Infographic: James Cameron's Mariana Trench Dive ]

Opening the deep
All three scientists have spent many hours aboard some of the few deep-diving research submersibles on Earth and said they hoped Cameron's technology eventually will prove a boon to researchers wishing to collect samples and perhaps even conduct experiments in the deepest reaches of the sea, a place that until now has been off-limits to humans.

"This establishes that the technology exists to allow that to happen, so we shouldn't constrain our thinking about approaching work in that extreme habitat," Robison told OurAmazingPlanet. "This is a technological breakthrough and a huge accomplishment on Cameron's part, and I'm very pleased that he's done it; but let's hope it opens the door for more."

Cameron's team hasn't confirmed what (if any) samples the filmmaker and explorer retrieved from the Challenger Deep during his three-hour seafloor sojourn. The sub is equipped with a sampling arm, among other research tools. However, Cameron did describe a bleak view through the windows of his lime-green submersible.

    1. Scientists take a look inside a jury's brains

"It looked like the moon," Cameron told National Geographic reporters upon his return to the surface world. [ See photos from Cameron's historic dive ]

For scientists, such an assessment was hardly discouraging.

"I was rooting for him to land and find strange-looking animals," Van Dover said, but she added she wasn't surprised. She said the seafloor is vast, conditions are harsh, and life is likely sparsely spread.

"Three hours is just a drop in the bucket, and with more hours I think he's going to discover cool things," Van Dover said. "How many years have we been studying the ocean? And it took until 1977 to discover hydrothermal vents." Van Dover specializes in researching the strange creatures that congregate around the seafloor vents, which spew super-heated water laced with trace chemicals that sustain the animals.

Robison, a veteran deep-sea ecologist, said that whatever does live in the trench, which is nearly a mile deeper than Mount Everest is tall, will be of great interest to scientists.

"Anything that has adapted to thrive in that habitat is going to have some really remarkable adaptations," he said. "But most of the animals in the ocean don't live on the bottom, so there's an enormous potential for discovery up off the bottom as well."

Much of the deepest ocean is unreachable via state-owned submersibles, which at this point can dive no more than 21,000 feet (6,500 m). Only Japan's Shinkai 6500 has reached such depths. The United States is refurbishing Alvin, its deepest-diving craft, to be able to reach 21,000 feet within the next five years. China's Jiaolong craft has plunged deeper than 16,400 feet (5,000 m) and is designed to dive to 23,000 feet (7,000 m).

New blood
Stern said he would love to get his hands on rock samples from the Mariana Trench ? the region is a subduction zone, an intersection of two tectonic plates where one plate is diving beneath another.

"To me the exciting thing is to see so deeply into the Earth. The rocks on the inner trench wall allow an unparalleled look into Earth's mantle," he said. "There is nowhere else on the planet where we could look so deeply into our planet's solid interior."

Even without geological samples to study, the recent landmark dive is a scientific milestone, Stern said. Not only is Cameron's submersible a completely revolutionary design, but the project has produced a less tangible, yet very beneficial effect: Cameron has galvanized public interest in the deep ocean.

"One of the problems we have as scientists is reaching the public, and he's smashed through that barrier like no scientist could," Stern said.

Both Stern and Van Dover said that engagement alone could pay huge dividends down the road.

"I wonder if a lot of young people are watching this, and if now there will be a whole bunch of kids who want to be engineers and deep-sea scientists. ? don't know if that's true, but that's what I hope," Van Dover said.

"It's one of those moments that captures the imagination," she added.

Video: Report: Sanford police wanted to charge Zimmerman

>> the news nation is following exclusive new developments in the trayvon martin shooting case. rio.com managing editor is reporting that the sanford police chief along with the state attorney made the call not to charge george zimmerman with a crime the night of the shooting. this comes as a report of the miami herald claims the lead investigator on that case, originally wanted zimmerman arrested in trayvon martin 's death. in the meantime, congressman was kicked off the house floor this morning after putting up a hoodie or putting on a hoodie in honor of trayvon martin . bobby rush out of illinois was asked to stop taking after taking off his jacket and putting on the hoodie as well as sunglasses.

>> just because someone wears a hoodie, does not make them a hood lum.

>> heed these lessons. may god bless trayvon martin 's soul.

>> the man who claims he is a friend of shooter george zimmerman is making the rounds on tv shows defended his relationship with zimmerman and here is what happened a short time ago when he spoke with my colleague thomas roberts .

>> one thing that we want to play is charles blow tacking to you last night about --

>> again, again, that interview had nothing to do with george and trayvon martin .

>> it has everything to do about what you know about the man you're trying to defend because you weren't there at the shooting.

>> neither was anyone else , and that's the problem.

>> we talk about who george zimmerman is and you're trying to defend a man that no one else is showing up to defend, not even his own parents have come out for an interview.

>> a major twist in the case, the report the lead investigator wanted manslaughter charges filed came as i mentioned last night and now there is word the call was made by higher ups the very night of the shooting not to file any charges. joining me from sanford is joanne reed, contributor, managing etd tore of the rio got come. you have this exclusive information. give us more details, please.

>> tamron, what we already knew is the state attorney's office advised the police department on the night of the shooting that there was not sufficient grounds to charge george zimmerman with the killing of trayvon martin . what we learned and what i learned exclusively early this morning was that it was the state attorney who is over this county who made that decision after consulting with the police chief , then bill lee , and robert o'connor, who was in charge of investigations for the sanford police department . we hadn't heard that before buzz wolfinger you will recall at one point was going to be the state attorney investigating this case. when police sent that case up to him, he, if this is all true, presumably knew he had made the decision not to arrest zimmerman over ruling the homicide investigator who after talking to zimmerman decided he didn't believe the story and filed an affidavit to that account.

>> joanne , also what is happening behind the scenes? obviously when you have a report like this that the lead investigator made this recommendation and now the exclusive information you have been able to uncover, what is the police department saying if anything today?

>> well, the police department is not talking, tamron. that's one thing that is definitely not happening here in sanford . every piece of information, everyone is being routed up to angela cory's office and the state attorney from a neighboring county in charge of the investigation, and i think what is significant here is that we did see state attorney wochlinger wochl recuse himself. if he was actually on the scene, something that would be unusual for a state attorney to do, if he came to the scene or to the police department , consulted with the chief, and that they really made the call to, quote, cut george zimmerman loose, he should have never taken the case. that fact that he recused himself would make that make sense. the question is whether or not the police department , the actual investigator, they ever acted on an attempt to get a charge against zimmerman . that's not clear. of course as you said the miami herald is saying there was at least a request for an arrest warrant .

>> joanne , thank you very much. how does this new information about police initial wanting or at least one lead investigator wanting zimmerman charged, how does that impact where we are now? joining me now miami criminal defense attorney and former u.s. attorney kendall coffee. help me understand, the state attorney made the decision the night of the shooting, the killing of trayvon martin . is that usual business?

>> it is not inconceivable. all of that is startling, especially when we examine the fact early on we were told there was never any consideration given to charging zimmerman , that it was in an open and shut self-defense case supposedly. now we're hearing something very, very different. according to these reports, the lead investigator, the person on the scene, the person that normally law enforcement would say is in the best position to there is prospect in arrest, he apparently was effectively overruled by people sitting back at the office. it does happen, but it certainly raises a lot of questions.

>> what question does it raise? does it say that are you asking if the sanford police department is incompetent, the question many others have asked, is this a coverup? what question as the experienced top legal person in the state of florida , what is the main question you have 30 days after trayvon martin was killed we're now learning this critical information about this lead investigator's analysis of the crime scene and what he thinks should have happened?

>> the most obvious thing it tells is is there is going to be a thorough investigation of what happened that night and also an investigation of the investigation by sanford police and the state attorney's office. from my standpoint, one of the big concerns is how can you so quickly dismiss what the lead investigator said where you have somebody dead, an unarmed somebody who was killed by somebody with a gun, and if that decision was going to be made so quickly, they better be darn ready to show a detailed file of all of the other steps they took before they overrule the judgment, the professional judgment, the person in the best position to determine whether or not there was probably cause to arrest george zimmerman .

>> what i am going to ask about now, i am not sure it is relevant at this point but you have this person that says he is george zimmerman 's friend and an associate of the family and nonetheless making the rounds on a lot of shows. i want to play two clip from lawrence o'donnell's show on the last word with zimmerman 's friend who so far is the only person coming out defending him. let's play both of those clips, please.

>> george zimmerman learned from his mistakes and grew from them.

>> what mistakes did george zimmerman tell you about and what did he -- how did he tell you he grew from his mistakes?

>> i am just saying from what i have seen, the person that i know, the george zimmerman i know was not the george zimmerman who was arrested in 2005 . i wouldn't put myself on the line like this if i didn't know in my heart that george zimmerman was in a life or death struggle. i wouldn't be here, i would not be risking myself.

>> how do you know in your heart?

>> have you ever had a gut feeling ?

>> you were not there.

>> have you ever had a gut feeling ? were you there? were you there were you there?

>> you have been a prosecutor. you have been a defense attorney . if you were george zimmerman 's attorney, would you at some point contact this alleged friend and say you're not helping the situation here, what is your motive here?

>> i would have called him a few days ago. enough already. understand part of defense strategy sometimes, remember, you can't put george zimmerman on the camera, is to use surrogates. this is becoming an unhelpful, distraction and just keeps feeding emotion and public discussion and controversy and so if i were the kwens lawyer i would say sit down, go quiet, you have had your 15 minutes of fame . move on.

>> is it likely oliver is acting on his own or do you believe that zimmerman 's attorneys would at this point be using this guy whose story changes with every interview as a surrogate for them?

>> somebody connected him up with the press. i don't know for a fact, but my instinct and speculation is the defense lawyer did it initially. it may have gotten out of his control at this point. it is not helping george zimmerman , that's for sure.

>> thank you so much for reacting to the latest news exclusive information from joanne reed.

Manifesto Retrospective Film Festival celebrates young filmmakers ...

A table at the Festival?s entrance gives visitors a brief profile on the five directors featured at this year?s festival // Photo courtesy of Barry Falls

The Manifesto Retrospective Film Festival, held this past Thursday at the Spirit Square, was a delightful event that showcased some prominent local student filmmakers of the Charlotte area.

The five filmmakers, who are all graduates of the Arts Institute of Charlotte, presented some of their previous award-winning works from past festivals, along with special premieres of their new thesis films.

At the beginning of the night, each filmmaker?s demo reel and previous works were shown, which gave a good representation of the style and personality of each filmmaker to be seen throughout the night ? with some being more playful, and some being more gritty.

The variety and contrast of new works between the filmmakers took the audience on a visual and emotional roller coaster throughout the entire night.? The first new film to be shown was from William Brooks.

Brooks is a graduate of the Arts Institute with a fine arts degree in Digital Film & Video. Along with being a freelance director, Brooks is also owner of his own production company, Envy Pictures.

He is a director, writer and editor with a great talent to display great melancholy emotion in his films with great subtly.

His thesis film, ?The Modest Truth?, follows a kid struggling to find a way to connect with his distanced father.

Set in a very simple backdrop of? South Carolina in the 1960s, and with simple but striking cinematography, the message of the film was presented very well.

Brooks became interested in doing this film because growing up, he never had to too hard with his parents.

?I wanted to experience that feeling [of parent to child struggle] on my own and share that with people,? Brooks stated in the post-festival question and answer session.

Next up was Nicole Driscott, a Boston native that decided to make the move to Charlotte to pursue a degree in filmmaking.

Discott has since graduated with a BFA in Digital Film & Video Production (receiving the ?Most Outstanding Graduate? award in her class), done freelance work and started her own production company ND Films.

Discott?s films focus on the significance of human interaction, and how it effects how we see ourselves and one another.

Her new thesis film, ?Intermediate?, follows MacKenzie Reed, a middle schooler who tries to find her inner identity all while dealing with the awkwardness that comes with prepubescence.

The film does a great job of putting the audience in MacKenzie?s shoes through her uncomfortable trials as a 6th grader.

Following such innocence, Jeremy Garcia?s film personality is a severe contrast, but a severely intriguing one at that.

After receiving his degree in Digital Film & Video Production, Garcia has been a busy man. He works as a freelance editor and camera operator with Dream Media Studios and Grey Hawk Films, and works as a director on music videos and feature-length projects through his production company Illuminated Pictures.

His new film, ?The Condition of Existence?, focuses on Dr. Edward Moore, a man who becomes creepily obsessed with his odd ?cure? for his patients? depression and anxiety.

Garcia?s dark and compelling film was the longest of the night, and because of some gripping images, truly one of the most memorable of the night as well.

And in great contrast to Garcia?s tone were works from the most playful filmmaker of the festival, Collin Scouter.

Scouter, who graduated with an associate degree in applied science in Digital Film & Video Production, has since worked as a cinematographer and camera operator for dozens of national and international projects.

He also heads up his own production company, Bad Piano Productions.

Already earlier in the night showing a film about two ridiculous guys playing disc golf, Scouter?s new music videos were about two ridiculous guys rapping about how ?Sherlock is a Poeser?.

In comparison with the other works of the night, Scouter?s films were very lighthearted and enjoyable because of their likable randomness.

?Okay, let?s surf on some cars. Or let Troy slam dunk in slow motion. Our improvisation is one of our best things,? said Scouter at the Q&A session.

The final filmmaker of the night was Christian Simpson, a graduate with an associate degree in applied science in Digital Film & Video Production.

With cinematography work ranging from documentaries to commercials to feature length films, Simpson has been very successful since his graduation. He also works as cinematographer at his production company, Down Home Films.

At the festival, Simpson presented his new long form music video for ?Watch You Fall? for local artist Orion.

The film focuses on Orion as a fighter competing in an underground fight match while both his worlds inside and outside the ring are fighting as well.

?Watch You Fall? was great work visually, audibly and story-wise and ended the entire night on a high note. The entire fighting sequence was filmed beautifully and choreographed very well.

Simpson consistently aims to make create professional, powerful and most importantly, convincing moving images.

?It was important to me and Christian that the punches didn?t sound like a kung-fu movie,? said Dustin Pegg, the editor and director of the film present for the Q&A session.

The overall experience of the Manifesto Retrospective Film Festival was a definitely a memorable one.

It was amazing to see the great accomplishments of these local filmmakers past and present, with a glimpse of their bright futures ahead.

Truly Disturbing Headline: Woman 'Died After Kissing Husband's ...

Such a sad story that truly does show that heartbreak can indeed cause death.?

A Western Australian woman has described the moment her grief-stricken grandmother collapsed and died after kissing her husband?s coffin at his funeral.

Michelle Chorlton buried her grandfather in early January 2002 and on the same day said goodbye to his wife who ?didn?t want to live without her husband?.

Her story is one of many shared by ninemsn readers today after a study by the University of Birmingham was released showing a scientific link between grief and the risk of infection.

The emotional stress of losing a loved one can lead to parts of the immune system being suppressed, researchers at the university said.

Ms Chorlton said her 79-year-old grandmother was in good health until her partner of 55 years died.

?She had old people problems like stiff joints, but she wasn?t sickly,? she said.

But after her husband?s death on January 4 she took a rapid turn for the worst.

?She became depressed,? Ms Chorlton said.

?We offered her to stay with us but she said she didn?t want to live without her husband?

The funeral was held at the Ukrainian Catholic Presbytery in Maylands, a suburb of Perth on January 9.

?It was sad but very beautiful,? she said.

?We went past the coffin and she kissed it to say goodbye and collapsed and died.?

?She was taken in an ambulance but she was already gone.?

Ms Chorlton said the moment her grandmother died was somewhat relieving, given the agony she was suffering in the shadow of her husband?s death.

Other ninemsn readers have sent in their stories of grief triggering the untimely death of a loved one.

Lyn Weckert?Abra told ninemsn her mother-in-law Joan, 72, died after her husband, Brian, 72, became seriously ill and was taken to hospital.

Brian contracted a rare water borne disease while on an annual fishing trip with Joan in Booraloola, on the Macarthur River in the Northern Territory.

He was transported to Royal Darwin Hospital and put on life support with doctors holding little hope of him making a recovery.

Joan rented a unit in a Darwin caravan park to be near Brian while he was in hospital.

After a week Brian had recovered enough to be taken off life support and his family was told he would soon be able to go home.

Shortly before he was due to check out Joan died of an asthma attack at the caravan park on a Monday night and was discovered the next morning.

?They were both fit and healthy,? Ms Weckert?Abra said.

?Joan would cleans houses and look after the elderly. A year before she died she was still working.?

Doctors advised Brian?s family not to inform him of his wife?s death immediately ? but he never received the news as he slipped into a coma on Wednesday for unexplained reasons.

?We were preparing to tell him but he slipped into the coma,? Ms Weckert?Abra said.

The next day he died.

Sydneysider Gordana Radosavljevic said her Serbian grandfather died walking home from a ceremony at his wife?s grave only five weeks after her death.

She said the change in his condition was ?almost instant? and he quickly went from a vibrant octogenarian who still toiled in the fields to a shattered man.

?My uncles went to look after him because he didn?t want to eat or do anything,? Ms Radosavljevic said.

?He just cried, he gave up.?

On the way back home from a ceremony at his wife?s grave he suffered a heart attack and died.

A former social worker from Melbourne, Melinda Wood, who worked in aged person?s mental health said she has witnessed the phenomenon on a number of occasions.

?I?ve seen how stress can affect people,? Ms Wood said.

?If someone died I would be following their partner closely because I knew what could happen.?

Professor Janet Lord, who led the research at the University of Birmingham, said that there seems to be a biological explanation behind anecdotes of long-term couples dying within days of each other.

?Rather than dying of a broken heart, however, they are dying of a broken immune system. They usually get infections,? Ms Lord said.

Immunologists at the university found emotional stress and depression can interfere with the function of a type of white blood cell known as neutrophils, which are responsible for fighting bacterial infections such as pneumonia.

Brain insulin resistance contributes to cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease

Saturday, March 24, 2012

Insulin resistance in the brain precedes and contributes to cognitive decline above and beyond other known causes of Alzheimer's disease, according to a new study by researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Insulin is an important hormone in many bodily functions, including the health of brain cells. The team identified extensive abnormalities in the activity of two major signaling pathways for insulin and insulin-like growth factor in non-diabetic people with Alzheimer's disease. These pathways could be targeted with new or existing medicines to potentially help resensitize the brain to insulin and possibly slow down or even improve cognitive decline.

This is the first study to directly demonstrate that insulin resistance occurs in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease. The study is now online in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

"Our research clearly shows that the brain's ability to respond to insulin, which is important for normal brain function, is going offline at some point. Insulin in the brain not only modulates glucose uptake, but also promotes the health of brain cells ? their growth, survival, remodeling, and normal functioning. We believe that brain insulin resistance may be an important contributor to the cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer's disease," said senior author, Steven E. Arnold, MD, professor of Psychiatry and Neurology. Arnold is also the director of the Penn Memory Center, a National Institute on Aging-designated Alzheimer's Disease Core Center. "If we can prevent brain insulin resistance from occurring, or re-sensitize brain cells to insulin with any of the currently available insulin-sensitizing diabetes medicines, we may be able to slow down, prevent, or perhaps even improve cognitive decline.

The risk of developing Alzheimer's disease is increased by 50 percent in people with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is due to insulin resistance and accounts for 90 percent of all diabetes. The defining clinical feature of Type 2 diabetes (and Type 1 "juvenile" diabetes) is hyperglycemia - high levels of sugar in the blood ? but there is no evidence that the brain in Alzheimer's is hyperglycemic. Insulin acts differently in the brain than in the rest of the body. Researchers found that insulin resistance of the brain occurs in Alzheimer's disease independent of whether someone has diabetes, by excluding people with a history of diabetes from this study.

The investigators used samples of postmortem brain tissue from non-diabetics who had died with Alzheimer's disease, stimulated the tissue with insulin, and measured how much the insulin activated various proteins in the insulin-signaling pathways. There was less insulin activation in Alzheimer's cases than in tissue from people who had died without brain disease. Other proteins linked to insulin action in the brain were abnormal in Alzheimer's disease samples. These abnormalities were highly correlated with episodic memory and other cognitive disabilities in the Alzheimer's disease patients.

In tissue from people with Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), researchers found that changes to a protein called insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1 pS636/639 and pS616) in brain cells were linked to the severity of memory impairments regardless of age, sex, diabetes history, or apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene status. Levels of IRS-1 were also significantly associated with, but not likely to affect, the presence of amyloid beta plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, the signature markers of Alzheimer's disease. This suggests that insulin resistance contributes to cognitive decline independent of the classical pathology of Alzheimer's disease.

Researchers noted that three insulin-sensitizing medicines are already approved by the FDA for treatment of diabetes. These drugs readily cross the blood-brain barrier and may have therapeutic potential to correct insulin resistance in Alzheimer's disease and MCI. "Clinical trials would need to be conducted to determine the impact the drugs have on Alzheimer's disease and MCI in non-diabetic patients," said Dr. Arnold.

Cardinal Turkson: Praying for conversions and the touching of hearts in Mexico and Cuba

2012-03-23 Vatican Radio
Cardinal Peter Turkson, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, expresses his hopes for Pope Benedict?s apostolic journey to Mexico and Cuba.

Speaking to Linda Bordoni, Cardinal Turkson says he is praying that this journey may touch the hearts and induce conversions as the Pope travels to two Latin American Countries with the same Spanish heritage, but with very different historical, political and economic developments.

He says that in both nations there are issues that are of particular interest to his Dicastery.

Mexico?s political history has seen periods of strained relations with the Church, but things have much improved.

As regards the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, generally ? he says - the human rights situation has improved in Mexico, but he points to the increase of violence and drug-related crimes.

He also mentions the effect of the drug trade on the United States because of the proximity of its border. And he points to the migration between the two country and ultimately to the security and stability in the country itself.

Cardinal Turkson says that ?certainly the Holy Father would have his own way of addressing these issues? through his own perspective as leader of the Universal Church

But Cardinal Turkson points out that Mexico is a profoundly Christian nation. And he speaks of his own experience of living the faith in the Latin American country.

He tells of when he participated in the Eucharistic Congress in Guadalajara. And then ? he says - he went to the Eucharistic Congress in Quebec. Quebec, he says, doesn?t compare to Guadalajara: in Mexico the whole population participated. During a procession everyone was hanging devotional items and religiously decorated items outside the windows. He says the people there participate with incredible warmth.

He says that probably, like in many other Latin American countries, ?the challenge is making something which is seen as traditions become a regular form of life?. It?s not enough to consider tradition as merely part of history, but people must reflect on ?what does it mean to be a Christian and bear witness to a Christian way of life?.

Cardinal Turkson says that especially in the area of crime and of the war going on between drug cartels, it is his prayer that the visit o the Holy Father touches hearts and induces some kind of conversion in those areas.

As regards Cuba, Cardinal Turkson says, the situation is quite different.

At the Council he says, as soon as the Pope announced the visit, ?we received some correspondence in protesting against the journey?. But ? he points out ? the Lord said it?I didn?t come for the righteous I came for the sinners?. The Holy Father, Cardinal Turkson says, doesn?t have to visit only the saintly places, but also those in which there problems are perceived. He says this visit for him is a joy.

Cardinal Turkson also points out that the situation in Cuba has undergone change through the years. He says it?s not the same Cuba of the Cold War of the Missile Crisis.

For example even this nation, with its meagre resources, shares what it has. And he speaks of all the medical doctors from Cuba who travel to other nations to give of their service.

Generally, Cardinal Turkson says that in many Cubans the faith is still there. ?This is a positive choice the Pope has made?

And the Cardinal says that he prays that whatever message the Holy Father chooses to deliver, it will be well received.

He also hopes there may be some conversions and prays the Lord may have his own way.

Phillip Phillips on American Idol: Moving Out, Moving On?

Forgive this broken-record-sounding statement, but: Phillip Phillips put on the best performance of any American Idol male last night.

The Dave Matthews wannabe nailed a version of Billy Joel's "Moving Out," sticking to his typical guitar use but adding almost a bit of anger to the cover. He definitely brought an edge to this slowed-down version of a classic.

All the judges have Phillip props to sticking to who he is as a singer. Watch him do so here:

On the woman's side? Elise Testone and Jessica Sanchez both had winning weeks.
