Rapid City SD Oct 15 2012?For the past five years, John Hoag has been the first face?DouglasHigh School?students see when they arrive at school each day.
He tries to make that contact count.
Hoag is in charge of?Douglas?School District?security. One of his many duties is checking identifications as students arrive for class each morning. ?I always give them a ?thank you? and a ?good morning,?? he said. ?It?s very important that they have someone to tell them, ?Have a good day.??
On Friday, Hoag was again front and center in the lives of?Douglas?students as grand marshal of the Douglas Homecoming parade. Hoag, who turned 62 Homecoming week, rode in the first car of the parade as it made its way around the?Douglas?campuses.
?I was touched,? Hoag said Thursday of being chosen. ?I?m very proud to be able to do it.?
Before his work in security at?Douglas, Hoag served in the military for 22 years, retiring in 1992 while stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base. Although he is originally from upstate?New York, Hoag decided to stay. ?I loved it here,? he said.
He began his work with the district 18 years ago. Five years ago, he made the move to security. It?s a job he loves. ?The kids are very important to me,? he said.
Douglas?principal Bud Gusso said Hoag?s impact on students is huge.
?Instead of just looking at badges, he says ?thank you? and ?good morning,?? Gusso said. ?Every student is welcomed every morning by Mr. Hoag. Six hundred fifty to 700 ?thank yous? and ?good mornings? every single day. That?s pretty darn cool.?
Hoag, who has also served as a reserve police officer with the Box Elder Police Department since 1999, feels strongly about the impact adults can have on students? lives. He hopes that his daily interaction with them is a positive one.
?They know that someone knows and sees and cares,? he said. ?I can always tell if someone?s not feeling well ? or if they?re having a rough day.?
