No iMore show tonight because I just got back from GDC, and it's easter, and we couldn't get it together. So we'll be recording tomorrow sometime. I'll let you know precisely when as soon as we figure out precisely when.
PITTSBURGH (AP) ? Despite losing their captain, the Pittsburgh Penguins found a way to finish the month unbeaten.
Pittsburgh, gearing for a run at the Stanley Cup, welcomed star forward Jarome Iginla to the lineup, but lost Sidney Crosby early in the first period after he was hit in the mouth with a puck.
Still, the Penguins managed to overcome the injury to Crosby on Saturday for their 15th straight victory as Matt Cooke and James Neal scored third-period goals during a 2-0 victory against the New York Islanders.
"It's very tough to see that happen to anybody on the ice, but this is your teammate and Sid's such a great player," Iginla said. "It's a very, very unfortunate play."
Tomas Vokoun made 35 saves as Pittsburgh moved within two wins of the NHL record of 17 straight victories set by Mario Lemieux and the 1992-93 Penguins.
"The shutout is nice, but preserving the winning streak is even better," Vokoun said. "It's been great."
It might be tough without Crosby.
Coach Dan Bylsma said Crosby lost several teeth and needed oral surgery. He did not know if Crosby would miss additional time and wasn't sure if the injury affected his jaw.
"I just know he had some issues with his teeth," Bylsma said. "Just from the replay I know that."
Crosby, with 15 goals and 56 points, has enjoyed a resurgence this season, leading Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos by 10 points in the NHL scoring race.
Another head injury for Crosby, however, has to concern the Penguins.
Crosby has missed considerable time the past two years because of concussions. He was sidelined the final 41 games in 2011 and the Stanley Cup playoffs, and skipped most of the 2012 regular season as symptoms lingered.
"I think every time that type of thing happens to a player you think about it," Bylsma said.
Crosby skated off the ice with a towel covering his mouth after a slap shot by teammate Brooks Orpik deflected off a stick and hit the NHL scoring leader in the face. Crosby, who immediately fell to the ice and tossed his stick in the air, did not return.
"When you see the replay, he had no chance to move," Iginla said. "Guys were definitely checking to see how he was doing."
Pittsburgh went 15-0-0 in March, the first perfect month in league history. The Penguins also won a franchise best 12th straight at home.
The Penguins, with a win at home against Buffalo on Tuesday, will have a chance to tie the record of 17 straight wins the following night at Madison Square Garden against the Rangers.
"It's exciting for our team, exciting for the players," Neal said. "We want to keep the streak going."
Iginla, a six-time All-Star, was acquired by the Penguins from Calgary early Thursday and he arrived in Pittsburgh on Friday night. He was in the lineup a game earlier than originally anticipated.
The move for Iginla, who waived his no-trade clause to come to Pittsburgh, was the Penguins' third big deal in a week. Pittsburgh also obtained former Dallas Stars captain Brenden Morrow and defenseman Doug Murray from San Jose.
The record crowd at Consol Energy Center responded with a huge ovation when Iginla was announced as part of the starting lineup.
Iginla, who played right wing for most of his career in Calgary, skated the left side on a line with reigning NHL scoring champion Evgeni Malkin and Neal, an All-Star forward.
The excitement quickly turned to concern 1:28 into the game when Crosby left the ice.
Pittsburgh appeared stunned without its captain, and the Islanders took advantage, getting the first eight shots of the game, but came up empty against Vokoun.
Vokoun earned his second consecutive shutout. Vokoun who hasn't been scored on in more than 162 minutes, relieved injured starter Marc-Andre Fleury during a 1-0 victory Tuesday against Montreal.
Vokoun's biggest save came in the third period, stopping Islanders speedy forward Michael Grabner on a breakaway.
Cooke scored his sixth goal of the season at 8:10, picking up the rebound from defenseman Deryk Engelland's shot at the top of the crease, and firing a spinning shot behind Islanders goaltender Evgeni Nabokov.
"I went to the net and the puck hit me in the stomach," Cooke said. "I stayed with it, tried to settle it and get it on net."
Neal scored at 13:04, firing a wrist shot past Nabokov. It was his 18th goal.
The Islanders entered Saturday's game tied with the New York Rangers for eighth place in the Eastern Conference.
The Islanders, who handed Pittsburgh one of four losses on home ice, ended up losing for the third time during the Penguins' 15-game winning streak.
"They've proven they can play without Crosby or Malkin, so it's not so much that," Islanders forward John Tavares said. "It's more about us and executing and doing what we need to do to win hockey games."
The Penguins received the biggest boost from their penalty kill.
Chris Kunitz, the team's second-leading scorer, was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct late in the second period for checking Islanders center Josh Bailey from behind.
Bailey initiated contact, but Kunitz got the better of the play, sending Bailey dangerously into the boards. Bailey did not return.
"I saw the hit, I'm not going to comment on the hit," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "Fortunately (Bailey) is OK, but obviously stiff."
The major penalty turned into a two-man advantage for the Islanders three minutes later when Orpik was whistled for tripping, but Pittsburgh successfully killed off both penalties.
"We had blocked shots, clears, we won some battles at the net," Bylsma said. "That's a long time to kill a 5-on-3 against a really good power play team."
"Every time we get a big kill, it's the loudest our crowd has been," Cooke said. "The crowd was intense and it definitely energized us."
NOTES: The Penguins have allowed nine goals in their past 11 games. ... Paul Martin will have surgery Sunday on a broken bone and will miss six weeks. The Penguins are already without Kris Letang, the NHL's leading scorer among defenseman, who is out seven to 10 days with a broken toe. ... Orpik appeared in his 621st career game, tying Ron Stackhouse for fifth on the team's games played list and first among defensemen.
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Kenya's Supreme Court on Saturday upheld the election of Uhuru Kenyatta as the country's next president, ending an election season that riveted the nation amid fears of a repeat of the 2007-08 postelection violence.
Outside the Supreme Court, police fired tear gas at Odinga supporters, the second time that has happened in this post-election period.
Outbreaks of violence by angry Odinga supporters were reported in some Nairobi slums and truckloads of police were called in to quell the demonstrations, according to reports on a police radio heard by an Associated Press reporter.
But jubilant Kenyatta supporters flooded the streets of downtown Nairobi, honking horns, blowing the noisy plastic horns known as a vuvuzelas and chanting.
Saturday's verdict ? following a drawn-out court case that raised tensions across the nation ? means that Kenyatta will be sworn in as president on April 9. He will become the second sitting president in Africa to face charges at the International Criminal Court. Kenyatta and Deputy President-elect William Ruto both face charges that they helped orchestrate the 2007-08 postelection violence in which more than 1,000 people died. Both deny the charges. Ruto's trial is set to begin in late May; Kenyatta's is to start in July. Kenyatta has promised to report to The Hague.
Lawyers for challenger Raila Odinga, who finished second, had argued before the Supreme Court that the election was marred by irregularities and that Kenyatta did not win enough votes to avoid a runoff election.
According to official results, Kenyatta won 50.07 percent of the vote, narrowly avoiding a runoff election against Odinga, who said his case before the Supreme Court would put Kenya's democracy on trial.
But the Supreme Court's unanimous verdict, read out by Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, said the election was "conducted in compliance with the constitution and the law" and that Kenyatta and Ruto were legally elected.
"It is the decision of the court that (Kenyatta and Ruto) were validly elected," the ruling said. The reasons behind the judges' decision were not given Saturday. The chief justice said a detailed judgment would be delivered within two weeks.
Unlike after the 2007 election, which degenerated into tribe-on-tribe violence that killed more than 1000 people, this time Odinga said he had faith in the judiciary's ability to give him a fair hearing. Odinga, who said he would respect the court's decision whether it favored him or not, was set to address reporters in Nairobi later on Saturday. As Kenyatta's supporters celebrated outside the court premises, police fired tear gas to break up a crowd of Odinga supporters.
The court's ruling ends days of anxiety since March 9, when Kenyatta was declared the winner of the March 4 vote that many described as the most complex in Kenya's history. More than 12 million Kenyans participated in the election. Some observers had expected a low registration of voters because of apathy following the 2007-08 violence, but hyped up campaigns by Kenyatta, Odinga and other presidential candidates led to the highest registration in the country ever. Kenya's electoral commission registered 14.3 million people.
Election day, though, did not go as planned. An electronic voter ID system intended to prevent fraud failed for reasons yet to be explained by the electoral commission. Vote officials instead used manual voter rolls.
After the polls closed, results were to be sent electronically to Nairobi, where officials would quickly tabulate a preliminary vote count in order to maximize transparency after rigging accusations following the 2007 vote. But that system failed, too. Election officials have indicated that computer servers overloaded but have yet to fully explain the problem.
As the early count system was still being used, election results showed more than 330,000 rejected ballots, an unusually high number. But after the count resumed with the arrival in Nairobi of manual tallies, the number of rejected ballots was greatly reduced, and the election commission said the computer was mistakenly multiplying the number of rejected ballots by a factor of eight.
Odinga's lawyers told the Supreme Court this week that the switch from electronic voter identification to manual voter roll was stage managed to allow inflation of Kenyatta's votes to take him past the 50 percent threshold. That accusation was vehemently denied by the electoral commission and Kenyatta's legal team.
Drobo has long had an apps platform to extend the usefulness of its smart drive enclosures, but there's been limits to what it can do in the cloud and mobile spaces. The company is widening that support this week, and it's inaugurating the effort with a pair of apps for the Drobo 5N. For us, the real highlight is Plex support, which turns the 5N into a high-capacity, redundant media server that can boost its storage as the content library gets bigger. The more pragmatic among us will like Barracuda Networks' Copy, which offers unlimited file syncing and sharing that will seem familiar to Dropbox aficionados. Copy is already available for free, while Plex should also be gratis when it's ready in April -- the only real hurdle will be justifying $600-plus for a living room video hub.

It's a VERY weird thing... supposedly, you can use .CalendarMonthBackground or .CalendarTitleBackColor, but I can't get it to work. The properties are in the property list, they're in the docs too, but it doesn't seem to work at all.

Yes, weird. It seems that MS in their wisdom haven't filled in these properties (excuse the silly pun! groan).
There is code here at SO to achieve this, but it is in C# and needs translation; but it requires creating a custom control that extends DateTimePicker.
const int WM_ERASEBKGND = 0x14; protected override void WndProc(ref System.Windows.Forms.Message m) { if(m.Msg == WM_ERASEBKGND) { Graphics g = Graphics.FromHdc(m.WParam); g.FillRectangle(new SolidBrush(_backColor), ClientRectangle); g.Dispose(); return; } base.WndProc(ref m); }

Starting with Windows Vista and depending on the theme, setting this property might not change the appearance of the calendar. For example, if Windows is set to use the Aero theme, setting this property has no effect. This is because an updated version of the calendar is rendered with an appearance that is derived at run time from the current operating system theme. If you want to use this property and enable the earlier version of the calendar, you can disable visual styles for your application. Disabling visual styles might affect the appearance and behavior of other controls in your application. To disable visual styles in Visual Basic, open the Project Designer and uncheck the Enable XP visual styles check box. To disable visual styles in C#, open Program.cs and comment out Application.EnableVisualStyles();
Doesn't solve your problem but it explains why those properties seem to have no affect. Unless you want everything to have that old ugly Win 98 look and feel

Const WM_ERASEBKGND As Integer = &H14 Protected Overrides Sub WndProc(ByRef m As System.Windows.Forms.Message) If m.Msg = WM_ERASEBKGND Then Dim g As Graphics = Graphics.FromHdc(m.WParam) g.FillRectangle(New SolidBrush(Color.AliceBlue), ClientRectangle) g.Dispose() Return End If MyBase.WndProc(m) End Sub
This sets the BackColor of the form itself, so if anyone knows offhand, how to use this to extend another control, we have a workaround.
Inspired by Meg Mathews? recent switch to a vegan lifestyle and the PETA 30 day vegan challenge, Nutrition Rocks are delighted to bring you our new and exclusive ?Vegan? section of our site! This section aims to offer our readers delicious and simple vegan recipes alongside practical, factual tips on how to be a healthy vegan and maximise health, beauty and vitality from the inside out. If you are not already a vegan we hope to inspire you to take on the 30 day challenge yourselves with our variety of original recipes ? from starters and mains to smoothies, juices and dips, we have got it covered! Deciding to become a vegan is a big lifestyle change, so whether you are ready to take this step or simply just want some new and exciting meat-free recipe ideas, Nutrition Rocks are here for you!
Vegan and vegetarian lifestyles are becoming increasingly popular. There are many reasons that people may decide to become a vegan, but whatever the reason it is essential that vegans are aware of the importance of ensuring the food they eat is adequate in nutrients and will provide your body with everything it needs. In doing this being a vegan can provide health benefits and other advantages.
There are, however, areas of concern relating to the nutritional status of those enjoying a vegan lifestyle. As with any eating pattern, the likelihood of being deficient in certain nutrients is higher in people who restrict the variety of foods they eat. We will discuss the nutrients of concern below ? stick with us and you can eat vegan the way it should be done!
Protein: the human requirement for protein is about 10% of total energy intake or less, which is very achievable on a vegan diet by eating plant-based foods that are rich in protein. There may be concern that vegans don?t get enough protein, and it?s true that you have to eat the right kind of protein rich plant-based foods to get the right combination of essential amino acids (the building blocks of protein), although as long as you eat a variety of protein rich foods throughout the day your body will be getting all the essential amino acids, and therefore protein, that it needs.
The three foods to remember that will supply your body with all the essential amino acids are hemp, quinoa and soya. Why not try quinoa porridge in the morning, delicious creamy puddings made with soya milk (look out for the ones fortified with calcium) or toasted hemp seeds sprinkled on your salads. Other protein-rich vegan foods to look out for and include in your diet are lentils, beans, chickpeas, tofu and nuts, including nut butters which are also a great source of essential fats, bringing us nicely onto our next nutrient?
Fat: fat gets a bad rep when it comes to nutrition; however in the right balance fats form a very important part of our diet, promoting cell function, protecting our internal organs and helping to keep our hair and skin healthy. Vegetarians and vegans often have lower intakes of fats than meat eaters so it is important to know which kinds of foods contain healthy fats in order to provide our bodies with energy and essential vitamins that can be provided by eating fats, such as vitamins A and E and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids cannot be produced by the body and need to be consumed from the food we eat ? there are many health benefits commonly associated with omega-3 fatty acids, including their role in heart health. The oils from fatty fish such as mackerel and salmon are the most commonly referred to source of omega-3 fatty acids, although there are lots of way for vegans to stock up on these healthy fats! The major vegan sources of omega-3 fatty acids include flaxseed, hemp seeds and hemp seed oil, rapeseed oil and our beauty nutrition favourite, walnuts. Some vegans may wish to consider a supplement made from algae that will provide the long chain type of omega 3 that is harder to get from food if you are a vegan, as it is the type found in oily fish (docosahexaenoic acid or DHA in case you?re interested)! Other healthy fats for vegans to be aware of are?mono-unsaturated?fats that you can get from avocados, olive oil, rapeseed oil and olives.
Vitamin B12: it is important that all vegans regularly include a reliable source of vitamin B12 in their diet (it is particularly important for pregnant women and young children who are vegan). The only natural source of vitamin B12 is meat, although there are several vegan products that are fortified, such as soya milk and cereals, and vegan supplements that are free from animal products are also available. Although requirement for vitamin B12 is very small, and deficiency is rare, long-term deficiency can lead to neurological damage and short term deficiency can lead to anaemia, fatigue and depression ? so it?s important to know your stuff! So when you?re shopping for cereal products and milk, ensure they are fortified with B12 or ask your pharmacist about a suitable supplement.
Iron: it can be difficult to get enough iron if you are a vegan or a vegetarian, but with a bit of knowledge on the rich vegan sources you can ensure your meals are packed with iron rich foods to help keep you full of energy and vitality. The iron found in plant sources is an inorganic (non-haem) form that is not as readily absorbed as the form found in meat. There are also various substances that can inhibit the absorption of non-haem iron, such as the tannins found in tea and high levels of fibre? (so save that cuppa for between your meals)! Vitamin C, however, increases the absorption of iron from plant sources significantly ? a perfect excuse to enjoy a fresh fruit juice with your meals. The plant sources of iron that vegans should look out for are fortified cereals, beans, lentils and chickpeas, dark green leafy vegetables and bread.
Zinc: zinc is similar to iron in that the richest sources are meat, and certain substances impair its absorption. Deficiency in zinc can lead to poor immunity and a reduced appetite ? not what we want! Vegan foods rich in zinc include toasted pumpkin seeds, peanuts and dark chocolate and cocoa powder (hooray)!
Calcium: because cows? milk and its products are the major dietary source of calcium it can be easy to forget that there are plenty of vegan sources that can keep your teeth and bones strong as well. So stock up on Brazil nuts, toasted sesame seeds, tofu, dark green leafy vegetables, fortified vegan milks and another of our beauty nutrition favourites, almonds. Why not snack on some raw unsalted almonds, throw a handful of toasted sesame seeds into your smoothies for a nutty twist and don?t forget your veggies! Remember ? calcium status is rarely a problem if vitamin D status is adequate so get those sunnies out as it?s nearly Summer?.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Police say a pair of eyeballs found in a medical box in a Kansas City gas station's trash bin aren't human.
Police spokesman Steve Young said Thursday that the police lab examined the eyeballs and determined they likely came from a pig.
Young says a worker at a Conoco gas station in northern Kanas City called police after finding the cardboard box late Wednesday. The box was labeled, "Keep refrigerated."
Surveillance video shows two men in a blue Toyota leaving the package on the trash bin.
Young says police aren't investigating further because no crime appears to have been committed. Earlier, police had said that no eye banks or hospitals in the area were awaiting delivery of any eyeballs.
Mar. 27, 2013 ? Fresh fruit and vegetables carry an abundance of bacteria on their surfaces, not all of which cause disease. In the first study to assess the variety of these non-pathogenic bacteria, scientists report that these surface bacteria vary depending on the type of produce and cultivation practices.
The results are published March 27 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Jonathan Leff and Noah Fierer at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
The study focused on eleven produce types that are often consumed raw, and found that certain species like spinach, tomatoes and strawberries have similar surface bacteria, with the majority of these microbes belonging to one family. Fruit like apples, peaches and grapes have more variable surface bacterial communities from three or four different groups. The authors also found differences in surface bacteria between produce grown using different farming practices.
The authors suggest several factors that may contribute to the differences they observed, including farm locations, storage temperature or time, and transport conditions. These surface bacteria on produce can impact the rate at which food spoils, and may be the source of typical microbes on kitchen surfaces. Previous studies have shown that although such microbes don't necessarily cause disease, they may still interact with, and perhaps inhibit the growth of disease-causing microbes. The results of this new research suggest that people may be exposed to substantially different bacteria depending on the types of produce they consume.

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) ? One of the three extremist groups being driven back in northern Mali by French-led forces says its fighters and leader, Iyad Ag Ghali, are fine and determined to keep attacking.
In its statement published this week on Mauritanian website Sahara Media, Ansar Dine said: "Even if only sticks remain with us, we will fight you with them."
For 10 months, Ansar Dine ruled a large swathe of northern Mali. In January, France launched a military intervention and removed the group from the main cities in the north, including Kidal, where Ag Ghali was based.
The French have since killed Abou Zeid, a major commander of the local al-Qaida affiliate, raising questions about the whereabouts of other leaders, including Ag Ghali.

Technology has given people unparalleled opportunities to socially connect and share information. It is not, however, normally associated with improving one?s physical health. Many spend hours ?plugged in? to their tech toys, preferring to stare at a screen than spend time on exercise and outdoor activities.
An apple a day ? With a background in health studies, Harsh Vathsangam has come up with an effective way to encourage exercise. ? Courtesy of Harsh Vathsangam
?
Despite this, technology does not have to work against one?s personal well-being. USC doctoral candidate Harshvardhan Vathsangam seeks to harness technology to encourage people to get moving and lead healthier lives through his app.
MeasureMe, Vathsangam?s budding company, has developed a smart and social software-based pedometer and calorie counter that uses the sensors in smartphones to characterize and quantify human movement.
MeasureMe is unlike applications such as Fitbit or Nike+ Fuelband, which burn through a phone?s battery life, making the apps frustrating for some users. Instead, MeasureMe utilizes the sensors in the phone, rather than GPS or any external sensing technique, which means a user can save 10 times as much power on their phone.
?MeasureMe has the potential to greatly improve [ease of use] and brings cost-effective activity monitoring into the pocket of every user,? Vathsangam said.
Vathsangam, who collaborated with Gaurav S. Sukhatme, a professor of computer science at USC who serves as the chair of the Department of Computer Science, has had plenty of experience melding health and technology.
Vathsangam spent four years studying on-body sensing and personal health and previously developed three generations of prototype hardware, building up the data-driven algorithmic framework to bring the product to its current level.
Vathsangam said his ultimate goal when designing his app was to change the way people behave in accordance to physical activity.
In Vathsangam and Sukhatme?s opinion, there are three ways to effectively change people?s behaviors. First, Vathsangam said it is important to correct behavior in real time so that one is conscious of when they revert to bad habits. The second, just as important, is to receive pressure from loved ones.
?When someone feels pressure from people he or she cares about, they are more likely to change his or her behavior in order to receive approval from them,? Vathsangam said.
The third way is by tailoring the application to meet the expectations of each individual.
?There was never a tool to tailor it to specific people until the invention of cell phones,? Vathsangam said. ?Everyone has a cell phone, therefore everyone can receive personalized information in order to change their behavior.?
To achieve this, the student-professor team programmed the application to use the power of big data to motivate the user to become more active. The application sends notifications to the user?s cell phone, reminding the user to meet his or her daily goal of exercise.
MeasureMe?s app also encourages friendly competition among users of the app. Users can check on the progress of friends to see how they are doing and keep them inspired.
The chat feature on the application also allows users to send messages back and forth about their exercise for the day.
It?s easy to get lost in the technical bells and whistles of the app, but Vathsangam stressed that at the end of the day, the app is not about the numbers.
?The application allows people to collaborate and encourages competition between friends,? Vathsangam said. ?We want to make it an interactive experience for users.
The purpose of this application was to create a social platform that builds off data that people generate in real time in order to induce lifestyle changes.?
The application is in beta right now, but Vathsangam said that his app will be released this summer in mid-May.
- No Godmodding! This is possibly the most important rule, DO NOT GOD MOD! We want balance between players right? Just to clear things up, my definition of god modding includes a character flawlessly pulling off seemingly impossible feats on his/her own, a character easily blocking and countering attacks from more skilled and experienced characters than him/herself in fights, creation of overly powerful characters with no weaknesses( more on this later, and well, earlier I guess, depending on the order you read this stuff), a character surviving events that should have otherwise killed him/her by sheer incredible luck( exceptions can be made ^^), a player giving his/her character information they would not actually have simply because the player him/herself knows it( know the line between your knowledge and your character's knowledge), and also anything overpowered and unfitting to your character's role. Think balance :>
- Blood, sex, alcohol, gore and all that stuff is 100% permitted. If you've got a fetish for describing to what extent and how far a character's loose eyeball is dangling from its socket, that's okay, you can do that. Also, sex and romance is okay as long as it does not take over and start governing the story itself, of course it's alright to develop a romance to have impact on it, but not to the point where more important matters are put to the side simply because of the "power of love" between two people. None of these things are required, and each to his/her own, you should probably be prepared for any of the beforementioned if you want to join though. :)
- Give your character real weaknesses! "Slight allergy to peanuts" or "Kind of bad at crafting bows" are not examples of what I'm looking for. Now, they don't have to be severe injuries like amputated legs, arms and nose all at once( unless you want to), but please make them at least matter a little.
- Characters are going to die. Be ready for it, because it could happen anytime, and while I'm not saying you should perform a super-ultra-death-slice just to get some people dying( because that would be god modding and also manslaughter isn't the point of this RP), it is alright to kill other players, it might be a good idea to ask them first though, so that you're not coming out of nowhere and stabbing them while they're in the middle of something important.
- Multiple characters are allowed, just don't go too far, I'd prefer if we could keep it to about 1-3/person or so.
- Have fun, and please don't feel hesitant to join because of my harsh dictator-like rules, I'm a softie at the core and if you just PM me about some exception you want to make I'll probably give in. ;)
DECATUR, Texas (AP) ? Investigators found bomb-making materials and pants that appeared to have blood on them in the car of a man suspected of killing Colorado's prisons chief, according to documents made public Tuesday.
Authorities also found maps, handwritten directions and documents from the Department of Corrections in Evan Spencer Ebel's black Cadillac. Also found were a Domino's Pizza worker's shirt and visor, and a pizza carrier bag along with zip ties and duct tape.
Ebel was killed in a shootout with Texas authorities last week after a high-speed chase.
Authorities in Decatur, where Ebel's car crashed before the shootout, sent the items they found to Colorado agencies investigating the death of corrections chief Tom Clements and the slaying of a pizza deliveryman whose body was found two days before Clements was killed.
Investigators haven't released a motive or commented on Ebel's ties to a white supremacist prison gang. The documents from Texas authorities detailing what they found in Ebel's car are not specific enough to shed additional light on the matter.
But Capt. Kevin Benton of the Wise County Sheriff's Office in Decatur said the handwritten directions that were found would be useful to Colorado authorities' investigation. He didn't elaborate.
Also in the car were black powder, a surveillance system, a digital voice recorder, and handwritten documents and letters, according to the documents.
Colorado investigators refused to discuss the evidence.
"We don't want to speak about their relevancy or what they might mean to our investigation," said Sgt. Joe Roybal, spokesman for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
A week after Clements died after opening his front door, investigators were still trying to determine Ebel's role in the slayings and whether others were involved. El Paso County authorities said they were able to match the gun Ebel used in the Texas shootout to the one used in Clements' slaying through microscopic marks left on the shell casings.
Authorities in Denver have said they're confident that Ebel is linked to the slaying of pizza delivery driver Nathan Leon, 28, a married father of two, but they have not said whether they've also been able to link the gun found in Texas to Leon's slaying.
Investigators are trying to determine whether Leon's slaying was to procure a pizza box and Domino's Pizza uniform to help persuade Clements to open his front door, El Paso County authorities said.
In Texas, authorities were trying to find out why Ebel was there and where he was going. After discovering bomb-making materials in his car, a Wise County detective was assigned to help the Texas Rangers investigating the case, Benton said.
"Everybody wants to know where he was headed to and why," he said.
A deputy in nearby Montague County who was shot by Ebel during a traffic stop before the March 21 chase was released from the hospital Tuesday and moved to a rehabilitation facility to recover from a severe concussion.
Clements' funeral was Sunday, and hundreds of law enforcement officers, corrections workers, lawmakers and state dignitaries attended a memorial service for him Monday. Clements was remembered as a prison system reformer with a strong belief in redemption and who worked to reduce the use of solitary confinement in Colorado prisons.
Lisa Clements said at the memorial that her husband of 28 years would want justice as well as forgiveness.
Ebel is the son of Hickenlooper's longtime friend, attorney Jack Ebel. Evan Ebel was on the governor's mind when he spoke to Clements before offering him the prisons job, citing the younger Ebel's prison sentence in solitary confinement as an example of needed prison reform.
Hickenlooper has said he did not mention Evan Ebel by name in that conversation, and there was no indication that his relationship with Jack Ebel played a role in the shooting. Hickenlooper also said he did not having any role in Evan Ebel's parole in January.
Evan Ebel's time in prison included solitary confinement, which his father testified to lawmakers two years ago was destroying his son's psyche. While in prison, Ebel was a member of the 211 Crew, a white supremacist prison gang in Colorado, according to law enforcement officials.
OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - In the law-and-order state of Oklahoma, where more women are incarcerated per capita than any other state in the country, a graduation ceremony on Monday celebrated an alternative to locking up nonviolent female criminals.
Four women who completed an intense rehabilitation program were handed dismissal papers from the Oklahoma County district attorney that dropped the criminal charges that normally would have sent them to the penitentiary.
The hope is that after a year or more of therapy, the four women will turn around their lives and, in turn, avert their children from a path to incarceration.
Some, including Oklahoma's state prison director, Justin Jones, believe breaking the cycle of incarceration by focusing on rehabilitating young mothers is a sensible alternative to prison overcrowding and building more penitentiaries.
"If you really want to stop the growth of imprisonment in the nation and in particular, Oklahoma, you've got to look at the next generation," Jones said.
About 70 percent of the next generation of inmates are going to be the children of men and women now in prison, he said.
"Programs like this are really critical in stopping that cycle of incarceration," Jones said.
But it's a tough sell in Oklahoma, a politically conservative state that executes more condemned prisoners per capita than any other state, including its neighbor to the south, Texas, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.
Oklahoma's prison system has been at 100 percent capacity for decades, Jones said, and 1,900 men and women who have been sentenced to the state penal system are being held in county lockups until there is room for them.
The numbers are projected to keep growing.
The female incarceration rate in Oklahoma stands at 121 per 100,000 population, compared with a national average of 65, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
Oklahoma's high female incarceration rate is related to strict mandatory minimum sentences for repeat offenders, poverty and the state's historically weak response to child abuse and drug addiction, according to Amy Santee, a senior program officer for the George Kaiser Family Foundation in Tulsa.
"Their trauma started very early in life," she said, adding that "it's very difficult to access substance abuse treatment unless you have money."
The foundation has provided key funding for an alternative prison program called Women in Recovery that began in 2009 and is aimed at young mothers in Tulsa County. The Oklahoma County program, called ReMerge, is patterned on the Tulsa experiment. ReMerge is funded by non-profits and by state and local government agencies.
The programs in the two counties are expensive and intense.
They include group and individual therapy, housing, job training and transportation. The women take regular drug tests and are monitored using global positioning devices on their ankles, at least for some time.
Many women in the programs have been sexually or physically abused as children, are victims of domestic violence and are addicted to drugs or alcohol, program officials said.
In many cases, the women have lost custody of their children, are estranged from their families and find themselves without a support system, said Terri Woodland, program director of ReMerge.
"Oklahoma is behind," Woodland said. "It seems overwhelming. If I could wave a magic wand, I'd give them all a grandmother, and an aunt."
The four women recognized on Monday expressed gratitude for the help and hope for the future.
"I was completely broken," said Dashelle Black, 39. "Today, I have a driver's license that I didn't have for 12 and a half years. That's amazing to me. I have my own place and pay my own bills. I never thought I would make it back."
