Uganda's army denies supporting Congo rebels

KAMPALA (Reuters) - Uganda has denied allegations its army was providing support to the M23 rebels fighting against the Kinshasa government in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), joining Rwanda which has also refuted similar accusations.

Congo's President Joseph Kabila said on Saturday his government had requested an explanation from Ugandan authorities after persistent rumours that its soldiers were backing the M23 group.

Fighting between the Congolese government and the rebels has displaced 470,000 people since April.

"General Aronda called on the Congolese government to prevail over those who are passing on such idiotic rumours against the government of Uganda and the UPDF," Uganda's military chief, General Aronda Nyakairima, was quoted as saying in a statement issued by Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF).

"... We cannot infiltrate the DRC and we will not do that."

Although Uganda's relations with DRC have markedly improved in recent years, the two neighbours were not seeing eye to eye in late 1990s and early 2000s after Uganda, alongside Rwanda, invaded the giant nation twice.

Uganda justified its invasion by saying it wanted to root out a rebel group, Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which has bases in eastern DRC and is opposed to the Kampala government.

The M23 rebellion takes its name from a 2009 peace accord the rebels say was violated by Kinshasa.

It has been swelled by hundreds of defectors from the Congolese army who walked out into the bush in support of fugitive Congolese General Bosco Ntaganda, wanted by the International Criminal Court on war crimes charges.

The leaders of Congo and Rwanda agreed to allow a neutral force to be deployed in Congo to defeat each other's rebels, but the plan's details have not been announced yet.

Kampala is scheduled to host regional leaders between August 5-8 to discuss the conflict after an interim report by the U.N.'s panel of experts accused Rwanda of backing the rebels.

Kigali has strenuously denied this, and in turn accused the international community of using Rwanda as a scapegoat for the chaos in eastern Congo.

Donors including the United States, Britain, the Netherlands and Germany have all suspended some of their financial aid to Rwanda over the accusations that it is backing the rebels.

The PR I get is used in the following ways:

1. Email and Social Media Marketing:

I send articles in which I am covered out to my extensive contact list via email.

At the same time those articles are distributed on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. This is how I keep my network informed.

2. In seminars on branding and networking, I use my own PR efforts as an example. Case in point:

Blog on Facebook:

Talked to journalists who were interested in IPO (this is where PR-Leads is instrumental).

?

This led to articles and being mentioned in:

Here is what I learned:

1. You need to have a point.

2. Make it easy for your reporter: Spell out the message.

3. Be respectful of timelines. Work quickly. Be responsive.

It seems things are happening in clusters. Sometimes nothing is happening for weeks. Then it bunches up.

Tiny Tokelau to be world's first solar-powered country

1 hr.

A project to convert the tiny island nation of Tokelau to all solar power is nearing fruition, as workers finish the first of three major panel arrays. Once activated, the installations should provide more than 90 percent of the power used by the islands' 1,711 residents.

Tokelau is a remote nation northeast of New Zealand?comprising three atolls, to which goods and passengers can only travel by boat. Their electricity needs, though modest, are met by burning diesel fuel in generators. The transportation of the nearly 2,000 barrels of fuel consumed each year costs the population around a million dollars ? a heavy toll.

The three solar arrays will generate about a megawatt in total, and batteries will keep the lights on at times when Tokelau's citizens previously could not afford to run generators. They are designed to withstand the humid and windy tropical environment, and actually produce a surplus of power, meaning the population can expand without taxing the system.

"We would expect this system to repay itself in five years, and?have?a 20-year project life before it needs any sort of significant maintenance," the director of Powersmart, the company that built the arrays, told 3 News in New Zealand.

The roughly nine million New Zealand dollars (around $7.3 million US) needed to plan and?build the installations was taken out in loans from the New Zealand government and contributed by the U.N. Development Programme.

When the installations are switched on in September, fossil fuels will only be necessary?for the three cars maintained by the country. Other countries and territories in the area, motivated by high fuel costs, plentiful sun, and relatively small populations, are also working on going all-renewable. Tuvalu, Samoa, and the Cook Islands may soon be the second, third, and fourth countries to rely almost entirely on solar power.

A good principle for categories is that there is only one place you would look for something.
If there was both Home Brew and Beer Making then which one of the two would you look in for brewing beer?

China divers hunt for Olympic gold

China will be looking for more Olympic gold in the pool Sunday as Wu Minxia launches their bid for all eight diving gold medals, with her attempt at a third straight synchronised three-metre springboard Olympic crown.

After a pulsating start in the pool Saturday when Ryan Lochte sunk record-chasing Michael Phelps while China's Sun Yang and Ye Shiwen wrote their name in the record books, Wu can leave the London Games as the most successful Olympian in the sport along with the retired Guo Jingjing.

To make the mark the 26-year-old diva diver needs to win both her springboard events and so add to her current tally of four medals.

Wu, who will team with He Zi, won the last two synchronised gold medals with Guo in Athens and Beijing and is an overwhelming favourite to successfully lead off China's quest to unite every Olympic and world diving gold medal.

World champion Qiu Bo, likened to a "robot" by his British rival Tom Daley, is expected to further enhance his glowing reputation in London.

The 19-year-old Qiu, who won two gold medals at last year's world championships, will partner Lin Yue in the men's 10m synchronised platform and take on the challenges of Daley and Australia's Matthew Mitcham in the individual platform.

British poster boy Daley, who relinquished his world title to Qiu last year, clings to the hope the Chinese superstar will crack under pressure, pointing out that he has beaten him four times in competition.

"Pressure sometimes gets to him. You have to be able to dive as well as him to put pressure on him. Because if you don't put pressure on him he's not going to buckle. So it's tough," Daley said.

Defending champion He Hong faces a challenge from Canada's two-time Olympic silver medallist Alexandre Despatie in the springboard event, while Qin Kai and Luo Yutong are the world champions in the synchronized springboard.

Chen Ruolin will defend her Olympic title in the 10m platform, and team up with Wang Hao in a bid to retain platform synchro gold.

Sunday's second full day of action sees 14 gold medals up for grabs, with highlights including American swimmer Missy Franklin, competing in seven events in London, beginning her individual programme.

In other highlights Marianne Vos of the Netherlands, one of the world's most decorated women cyclists, will go into the women's 140 km road race as the hot favourite on Sunday and ready to put past world and Olympic disappointment behind her.

"It will be a tough race but I do not think I can be satisfied with silver or bronze," said Vos.

"Am I stronger than ever? Yes, I think I can say that."

Lizzie Armitstead is the hosts' big gold hope if the race finishes in a group sprint, while defending champion Cooke gives Britain another option.

"Most people are going to be watching Marianne Vos, she's going to be heavily marked and that will be an advantage for us," said Armitstead.

Vos is not Britain's only obstacle to possibly claiming gold a day after Mark Cavendish's bid to give Britain a golden start to the Games.

Giorgia Bronzini has won the past two world championships thanks to winning sprints, and her Italian team-mate Tatiana Guderzo won the 2009 edition.

"She's shown that she can win in the big moments, she's a two-time world champion and she's ready for this, I'm sure," American sprint specialist Shelley Olds told AFP.

Germans Judith Arndt and Ina Teutenberg are, along with Vos, Cooke and the Italians, the most experienced racers in the women's peloton.

But Olds believes the Italians' long love affair with the sport -- and their ability to race as a cohesive unit -- could give them the edge.

Elsewhere five-time world champions, Slovakian twins Peter and Pavol Hochschorner will be bidding for another Olympic gold showing when the canoe slalom gets underway.

The Hochschorners became the first slalom canoeists to win three Olympic gold medals four years ago, and the pair are focused on going even better in London.

But the twins will be up against Czech pair Jaroslav Volf and Ondrej Stepanek, who have claimed two Olympic medals, one world championship title and three European championship titles, but remain in their Slovak rivals' shadow in terms of topping the Olympic podium.

Also Sunday triple Olympic champion Ben Ainslie will lead home hopes in the sport of sailing in which Great Britain leads the all-time medals table with 50, including 25 golds.

Ainslie and his fellow mariners will have the particular attention of International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge, who represented Belgium in the event in three Games.

On Saturday Lochte's 400m individual medley showdown with Phelps turned out to be a no-contest as he dominated to win in 4min 05.18sec, ahead of Brazilian Thiago Pereira and Japan's Kosuke Hagino, with Phelps back in fourth.

"It was just a crappy race," Phelps said. "I felt fine the first 200 and then I couldn't really go the last 100."

Phelps has another six events to go. But Lochte was not the only star of the first full day of action as Sun became China's first ever male Olympic champion in the pool, with a commanding swim in the 400m freestyle.

Sun's clash with champion Park Tae-Hwan was also much anticipated, but it almost didn't happen after the South Korean was disqualified from his heat for a false start, before being reinstated after an 11th-hour appeal.

But the stand-out swim of the pool's opening night belonged to Ye, 16, who shattered the 400m medley world record with 4:28.43 -- more than a second faster than defending champion Stephanie Rice's time from Beijing 2008.

Australia won their first gold in the women's 4x100m relay, with Alicia Coutts, Cate Campbell, Brittany Elmslie and Melanie Schlanger beating out the Netherlands and teen star Missy Franklin's American team.

Kazakh cyclist Alexandre Vinokourov shocked hosts Britain in the men's road race while Chinese world number one shooter Yi Siling had the honour of claiming the first of the Games' 302 golds at the Royal Artillery Barracks in the women's 10m Air Rifle.

Russia's Arsen Galstyan won the men's under-60kg judo and Sarah Menezes took Brazil's first Olympic gold in the sport, in the women's under-48kg.

But the story of the under-48kg was Hungary's Eva Csernoviczki, who bounced back from being strangled unconscious in the quarter-finals to claim an unlikely bronze.

In the men's cycling, Britain's Tour de France heroes Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish were undone by a combination of tactical racing and some incisive, late attacks, finishing well off the podium.

South Korea enjoyed a golden start when sharpshooter Jin Jong-Oh won the Olympic men's 10m air pistol gold medal.

And New Zealand's Hamish Bond and Eric Murray set the third world record of the Games, in the men's pairs rowing.

Saturday also witnessed the first failed drugs test of the Games after Albanian weightlifter Hysen Pulaku was suspended for taking the banned steroid stanozolol.

Quality of life 12 to 32 months post-treatment among men in Norway ...

Posted on by Sitemaster

A recently reported study offers us data from a cohort of?nearly 800 men in Norway, all diagnosed in 2004 with localized or locally advanced prostate cancer and then surveyed for quality of life in October 2006.

This study may tell us more about the quality of life after treatment in Norway than it does about quality of life post-treatment in other countries, but it is still of considerable interest because it is one of very few attempts to obtain good data on quality of life post-diagnosis and treatment across an entire nation (as opposed to from a specific institution).

Kyrdalen et al. set out to do three things:

  • Gain accurate estimates of typical, population-based adverse effects (AEs) to treatment ? or no treatment ? among men?with localized or locally advanced (but non-metastatic), recurrence-free prostate cancer
  • Describe associations between typical AEs and global quality of life (QOL)
  • Study patients? use of medications for erectile dysfunction?(ED) and their effects of such medications on?global QOL.

The survey was based on data collected using a postal survey mailed to a national, population-based sample of prostate cancer survivors in October 2006. All men surveyed had been initially diagnosed in 2004 and had completed their initial treatment. The use of a national prescription database?allowed the research team?to gain accurate information on the application of adjuvant hormone therapy and medicines for treatment of ED.

The researchers classified responders into one of four ?treatment? categories:

  • Men who received no treatment (i.e., they were simply monitored in some way) (Group A)
  • Men treated by first-line radical prostatectomy (RP) (Group B)
  • Men treated by first-line?radiation therapy without hormone therapy (Group C)
  • Men treated by first-line radiation therapy with hormone therapy?for 3-24 months (Group D)

Here are the core findings of the study:

  • 771 men who met the study criteria returned completed survey forms.
  • Men?in Group B?reported more urinary incontinence (24 percent) than men in the other three treatment groups.
  • Men in Group B had the lowest level of moderate/severe?irritative-obstructive urinary symptoms.
  • Men in Group A?had the highest level of moderate/severe irritative-obstructive urinary symptoms.
  • Men in Groups C and D reported higher levels of irritative intestinal symptoms and fecal leakage than men in Groups A and B.
  • Poor sexual drive and poor erectile function were common AEs in all groups,?but men?in Group B?reported the highest prevalence of poor erectile function (at 89 percent).
  • Reports of irritative-obstructive urinary symptoms and poor sexual drive were independently associated with low global QOL.
  • 50?percent of the entire study group had used medication for ED?after the start of their treatment start.
    • 47 percent?of these men?were still using medication for ED at the time of the survey.
    • Use of medication for ED was not significantly associated with global QOL.

The authors conclude that, in this Norwegian study population:

  • Prostate cancer?survivors initially diagnosed with localized or locally advanced disease have high levels of urinary and sexual AEs at 12 to 32 months of follow-up ? after curative treatment or after simple monitoring.
  • Irritative-obstructive urinary symptoms and poor sexual drive were significantly associated with low global QOL.
  • Erectile function and use of medication for ED were not associated with low global QOL.

The results of this study are not exactly surprising. Although this information is not provided in the abstract, it would be reasonable to assume that the average age of the patients at the time of competion of the survey was probably nearer to 70 years than 65 years, and so a?relatively low level of sexual drive and a?high level of ED would be quite normal in such a population.

  • "Grey's Anatomy"

<strong>"Grey's Anatomy," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Shonda Rhimes' medical drama is a ratings juggernaut, even in its eighth season, and with most of her <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/10/greys-anatomy-ellen-pompeo_n_1506113.html?ref=tv" target="_hplink">big stars signed on for more</a>, ABC gave the go-ahead for a ninth season.

    <strong>"Man Up!," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> ABC pulled the show after eight episodes.

  • "The Middle"

<strong>"The Middle," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Now in its third season, "The Middle" is still holding onto its middle position in the ratings on Wednesday nights, and that seems just about right. It doesn't do "American Idol" or "Survivor" numbers, of course, but with over 7 million viewers, it's a strong comedy for the network that easily beats anything NBC is offering.

  • "Missing"

<strong>"Missing," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Ashley Judd lead this drama about a former CIA agent whose son goes missing, kicking her back into action to find him. The series was only set to air 10 episodes, miniseries-style, with the potential for more, but a cancellation means that's all they're getting.

  • "Modern Family"

<strong>"Modern Family," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Modern Family" remains ABC's biggest sitcom success story of the last decade, both in ratings and awards love. This critical darling is getting a fourth season of hijinks with the hilarious Pritchett-Dunphy clan.

  • "Once Upon A Time"

<strong>"Once Upon A Time," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Once Upon a Time" has gotten praise for being one of the more family-friendly dramas on TV, and it's been pulling in close to 10 million viewers each week because of it. We're excited by the almost endless possibilities for new fairy tale-inspired stories to tackle in Season 2.

  • "Pan Am"

<strong>"Pan Am," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Poor "Pan Am" just never quite took off. The series' vintage look actually worked against it, much like NBC's swiftly canceled "Playboy Club" -- guess when you're being compared to award-winning shows like "Mad Men," it makes it more than a little tough to live up to the hype.

  • "Private Practice"

<strong>"Private Practice," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Private Practice" has never gotten "Grey's Anatomy"-level ratings, and things got shakier when ABC bumped it to Tuesday nights to make room for creator Shonda Rhimes' <em>other</em> new show, "Scandal," but they've given the show a sixth season order.

  • "Revenge"

<strong>"Revenge," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> With a clever mix of drama, mystery and serious revenge-ing, this is hands down one of the most addictive new shows on TV, and we can't wait to see where they take things in Season 2.

  • "The River"

<strong>"The River," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The promise of "Paranormal Activity"-like scares each week quickly fizzled after this show premiered, along with the ratings. The first season's eight episodes came and went, and ABC has nixed any plans for more.

  • "Scandal"

<strong>"Scandal," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Shonda Rhimes' latest show isn't about doctors at all -- and that's why we're glad it's sticking around. Kerry Washington is amazing as Olivia Pope, a Washington, D.C. fixer with a crack team of specialists helping make bad headlines vanish before they're ever written. Here's hoping for more than seven episodes in its second season.

  • "Shark Tank"

<strong>"Shark Tank," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Now in its third season, this reality competition show is unlike any other on network TV and ABC is keeping it around for more for that very reason.

  • "Suburgatory"

<strong>"Suburgatory," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> It's smart, quick and not too cute -- "Suburgatory" is consistently named the sitcom you should be watching, but probably aren't. The great cast makes this one a no-brainer, and the ratings have stayed pretty consistent, too. We're thrilled it's getting a second season to shine!

  • "Work It"

    <strong>"Work It," ABC</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Let us count the ways ...

  • "2 Broke Girls"

<strong>"2 Broke Girls," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>At first, people balked at the racist supporting characters, but now it seems that audiences are all over "2 Broke Girls" -- it's ratings have seen a steady increase, and it won the People's Choice Award for Favorite New Comedy.

  • "A Gifted Man"

<strong>"A Gifted Man," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>"A Gifted Man's" total viewer numbers were OK for a Friday night, but a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic is especially bad for CBS. Another bad sign: star Patrick Wilson tweeted about the end: "I had a great time. Thanks to my fans. So happy it's done." And done it is.

  • "The Amazing Race"

<strong>"The Amazing Race," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Voted the best reality show on TV several times (albeit years ago), "The Amazing Race" isn't going anywhere. Ratings have dropped a bit, but are still solid.

  • "The Big Bang Theory"

<strong>"The Big Bang Theory," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Nothing seems to be able to make a dent in this show. With fantastic ratings (it beat "Idol"!) and a rabid following, we'll be seeing plenty more "Big Bang" before its run is over.

  • "Blue Bloods"

<strong>"Blue Bloods," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The anchor of Friday nights on CBS, "Blue Bloods" has performed well, pulling in around 11 million viewers an episode. The show might not have the youngest audience, but it's still enough for CBS to keep it on the schedule.

  • "Criminal Minds"

<strong>"Criminal Minds," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Paget Brewster might be checking out, but "Criminal Minds" is here to stay. In Season 7, the procedural is still a consistently strong ratings performer for CBS.

  • "CSI"

<strong>"CSI," CBS</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Whenever the time comes, the "CSI" mothership will end with a lot of fanfare, but not this year. With new faces Ted Danson and Elisabeth Shue around, there is going to be at least one more season.<br />

  • "CSI: Miami"

<strong>"CSI: Miami," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Out of the three (!) "CSI" programs on the air, "CSI: Miami" is the one to say goodbye first. The one-time ratings giant has been affected by football overruns (just as "The Good Wife" has) and "CSI: NY" has the edge in terms of total viewers, meaning a "Miami" sunset was inevitable. <br />

  • "CSI: NY"

<strong>"CSI: NY," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Of the two "CSI" spinoffs, "CSI: NY" is the stronger -- pulling in more than 10 million viewers on a Friday night is no easy task -- and with "CSI: Miami" canceled, "CSI: NY's" renewal was a no-brainer.

  • "The Good Wife"

<strong>"The Good Wife," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This critical darling suffered after its move from Tuesdays to Sundays thanks to sports overruns. The viewers are frustrated, but given its strong cast and Emmy love, the show is still coming back for more.

  • "Hawaii Five-0"

    <strong>"Hawaii Five-0," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Despite the scheduling setback as Alex O'Loughlin seeks treatment, Season 2 is still doing well for CBS in a very competitive timeslot.<br />

  • "How To Be a Gentleman"

<strong>"How To Be A Gentleman," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Not even having "The Big Bang Theory" as a lead-in could save this David Hornsby project, which only lasted three episodes.

  • "How I Met Your Mother"

<strong>"How I Met Your Mother," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> CBS renewed "How I Met Your Mother" for two more seasons in March 2011, so fans can look forward to being strung along about the titular mother's identity for a bit longer.<br />

  • "The Mentalist"

<strong>"The Mentalist," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Although the show hit a season ratings low in the middle of February, its fanbase and overall ratings were enough to have it return for another season.

  • "Mike & Molly"

<strong>"Mike & Molly," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Thanks to an Emmy win and Oscar nomination, Melissa McCarthy is a Hollywood power player and CBS is keen to keep her around. Just look at the multiple pilots she has in the works as a behind the scenes player! "Mike & Molly" will be back for a third season.

  • "NCIS"

<strong>"NCIS," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The long-running procedural has become a ratings juggernaut at a time when most shows start shedding viewers. Season 10 is now happening.

  • "NCIS: Los Angeles"

<strong>"NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show has gone up in the ratings over the last couple of years, and people can't get enough of L.L. Cool J and Chris O'Donnell.

  • "NYC 22"

<strong>"NYC 22," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This "Rookie Blue" clone from executive producer Robert DeNiro didn't really move the needle when it premiered midseason; CBS officially axed it with three episodes left to air.

  • "Person of Interest"

<strong>"Person of Interest," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> With ratings matching juggernauts like "Grey's Anatomy" and fans popping up everywhere, we'll be seeing another season of "Person of Interest."

  • "Rob"

<strong>"Rob," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Rob's" spot after ratings juggernaut "The Big Bang Theory" probably went a long way in helping it survive to see the end of its first season, but that's as far as it'll get.

  • "Rules of Engagement"

<strong>"Rules of Engagement," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show has moved around so much it's hard to remember when it's on, and with six seasons under its belt it's had quite a nice run. Despite slipping ratings and the aforementioned constant switcheroos, there's still a future for "Rules of Engagement."

  • "Survivor"

<strong>"Survivor," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Of <em>course</em> we have "Survivor" coming back for another season. Where else are we going to see petty squabbles and insane behavior on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world?

  • "Two and a Half Men"

<strong>"Two and a Half Men," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Despite a less-than-favorable critical response, the revamped "Two and a Half Men" keeps pulling in respectable numbers every week. Ashton Kutcher, Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones will all return for a Season 10.

  • "Undercover Boss"

<strong>"Undercover Boss," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The inherent addictiveness of this show has gone a long way in securing loyal viewers -- it has been on top of the ratings several times this season alone.

  • "Unforgettable"

<strong>"Unforgettable," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Likely to be renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> In its timeslot, "Unforgettable" keeps emerging on top, beating out "Parenthood" and "Body of Proof." Leading lady Poppy Montgomery has been called "the female version of 'The Mentalist,'" another top-rated show, so things are looking positive.

  • "90210"

<strong>"90210," The CW</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> While its ratings have plummeted since last season, the Beverly Hills crew is still doing better than "Supernatural," "Hart of Dixie," "Nikita," and "Gossip Girl" on average.

  • "America's Next Top Model"

<strong>"America's Next Top Model," The CW<br /> Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Tyra Banks' reality show is in the early stages of its 18th cycle with a Brit vs. U.S. installment. Cycle 19 will be the show's inaugural "college edition."

  • "H8R"

<strong>"H8R," The CW</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Apparently, the opposite of MTV's former series "Fanatic" proved people don't love to hate Kim Kardashian and Snooki as much as we thought. It lasted four episodes.

  • "Hart of Dixie"

<strong>"Hart of Dixie," The CW</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Josh Schwartz and Rachel Bilson return for a sophomore season of "Hart of Dixie," hopefully so they can make more viral videos.

  • "Nikita"

<strong>"Nikita," The CW</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>We're shocked the show is coming back for another season, but its hard-core fans will certainly be happy.

  • "One Tree Hill"

<strong>"One Tree Hill," The CW</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> After nine seasons, it's time to say goodbye to "One Tree Hill." After subpar ratings, the network decided to pull the plug on its long-standing teen soap. Thankfully, the CW gave "One Tree Hill" a final 13 episodes to wrap up all of the drama.

  • "Remodeled"

<strong>"Remodeled," The CW</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> As good as dead<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Not only has "Remodeled" already been replaced on the CW schedule, but it debuted with one of the CW's lowest-rated premiere ever, scoring a terrible 0.3 in the coveted 18-49 demo.

  • "Alcatraz"

<strong>"Alcatraz," Fox</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Alcatraz" -- and almost every other recent J.J. Abrams TV project -- proves that slapping "from J.J. Abrams" on a show does not equal ratings success. The series debuted strong, but fizzled in the ratings, leading Fox to pull the plug.

  • "Allen Gregory"

<strong>"Allen Gregory," Fox</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Jonah Hill's animated series only lasted seven episodes. The Oscar nominee should probably just stick to movies for a while ...

  • "Bones"

<strong>"Bones," Fox</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed <br /> <strong>Why: </strong>The show got a ratings boost thanks to its lead-in "The X Factor." With the floundering state of Fox's dramas (see ya, "House"), Fox is holding on to this one.

  • "Breaking In"

<strong>"Breaking In," Fox</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>After a last minute revival, "Breaking In" returned for a second season with Megan Mullally in tow, but it wasn't enough to revive this D.O.A. comedy.

  • "The Cleveland Show"

<strong>"The Cleveland Show," Fox</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Fox gave "The Cleveland Show" and "American Dad" early renewals and this spinoff will be back for a Season 4, but no word on a fifth season.<br />

Cool, cool, cool -- you can pop, pop! that champagne now.

  • "Fashion Star"

<strong>"Fashion Star," NBC</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>The high-style reality series with Nicole Richie, Jessica Simpson, Elle Macpherson and John Varvatos has certainly been confusing, but it's still a smart business model: The winning designs each week are for sale in stores the next day, and those stores just happen to be covering a large portion of production and advertising costs.

  • "Fear Factor"

The numbers are still good (by NBC standards) and "The Office" will return for a Season 9.

  • "Parenthood"

<strong>"Parenthood," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The perpetual bubble show has done pretty consistent numbers for NBC this season, but three seasons in and no signs of growth is both a good and bad sign ... luckily for fans, NBC gave it a Season 4 all the same.

  • "Parks and Recreation"

<strong>"Parks and Recreation," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Just like the rest of NBC's Thursday comedy block, "Parks and Recreation" has serious ratings blues. Can critical acclaim keep "Parks" around for a Season 5? The answer is yes! "Parks" will return for Season 5.

  • "The Playboy Club"

<strong>"The Playboy Club," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Apparently fictional slutty bunnies and real-life homewrecker Eddie Cibrian do not a successful show make. It only lasted three episodes. "The Girls Next Door" did it better.

  • "Prime Suspect"

<strong>"Prime Suspect," NBC <br /> Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Maria Bello's gruff detective failed to capture the audience NBC hoped. At least we had all those hat jokes. <br />

  • "Smash"

<strong>"Smash," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed <br /> <strong>Why: </strong> After a huge promo blitz, "Smash" debuted nicely, but started losing viewers quickly. A handful of episodes in, it stabilized, becoming NBC's #1 drama in the 18-49 demo, and NBC announced it was getting a second season.

  • "Up All Night"

<strong>"Up All Night," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The critical favorite of NBC's new comedy offerings, "Up All Night" debuted strongly to more than 10 million viewers, but has since dropped to less than 4 million viewers an episode. It will return for a Season 2.

  • "Whitney"

<strong>"Whitney," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The show is one of the better performing freshman offerings on the Peacock network -- and NBC chief Bob Greenblatt told members of the press at TCA that he is "hopeful Whitney will be a long-term player for us." Looks like Season 2 is a good start, with the show moving to Friday nights.

  • "The Voice"

<strong>"The Voice," NBC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> We may not even be at Season 2's live shows yet, but NBC is already up for more of "The Voice." Hopefully, Cee Lo's cat "Purrfect" will return for Season 3 as well.

  • "Who Do You Think You Are?"

<strong>"Who Do You Think You Are?," NBC<br /> Status:</strong> Likely to be renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The celebrity-centric family tree series has helped NBC on Friday nights and hit its ratings high in March.

Internet Market in Libya to be Opened for Private Companies ...

The spokesperson of the?Libyan Transitional Government, announced on Wednesday that Libya will soon allow private local companies to provide internet services to subscribers throughout the country.

This is the first initiative of its kind that the Libyan government has ever offered. During the Gaddafi era, the Internet was monitored and controlled by the state. The public company ?Libya Telecom and Technology? monopolized the field, guaranteeing government control over information traffic.

Since licenses have not been allowed to private companies since the Internet first came to Libya in 1999, this recent step shows the development and the openness of Libya?s new information sector. ?This is a new step for private companies to enter the local market of internet,? added Manaa.

The number of internet users in Libya reached 353,900 in 2009. However, according to the Libyan Minister of Communications, Anwar Abu Bakr Alfitouri, ?Libya is still facing major challenges in developing the diverse framework required to provide its citizens e-services, such as online banking, payments, and commerce,? he explained.

The decision to open the Internet field to private companies was welcomed by commentators and observers of the Libyan government. Tahani Chrif, a political commentator said, ?We hope that the private sector gets involved in the country?s economy, and that all the companies compete fairly.?

Chrif also expressed her happiness and optimism that hopefully due to market competition, the prices for internet service will be less than they used to be. ?There will be many companies competing, citizens will have freedom of choice and thanks to that competition, the companies will offer the best price and services for people.?

Chrif, however, emphasized that the government in Libya should keep the public sector along with encouraging the private sector in order to protect citizens from an absolute free market economy. ?The public and the private sector should function side by side in order to create such kind of balance for the economy and for the people,? she concluded.

Obama to give Israel $70M in military funding

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama said Friday he is releasing an additional $70 million in military aid for Israel, a previously announced move that appeared timed to upstage Republican rival Mitt Romney's trip to Israel this weekend.

The stepped-up U.S. aid, first announced in May, will go to help Israel expand production of a short-range rocket defense system. The system, known as Iron Dome, has proved successful at stopping rocket attacks fired at Israeli civilians from close range, including from Gaza. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly ahead of the president.

Obama announced the new military assistance as he signed a bill in the Oval Office expanding military and civilian cooperation with Israel.

Obama said the bill underscores the United States' "unshakable commitment to Israel."

The White House focus on Israel this week comes as Romney prepares to visit Jerusalem. The presumptive GOP nominee is a critic of Obama's policy toward Israel and has promised to ramp up U.S. aid to the Jewish state, although Obama officials say the administration already provides record levels of funding.

A Romney spokeswoman said the former Massachusetts governor was happy to see steps being taken to enhance security cooperation with Israel.

"Unfortunately this bill does nothing to address yesterday's evasiveness from the White House on whether President Obama recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which raised doubt about the president's commitment to our closest ally in the region," said Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg.

Romney is in London on the first leg of an overseas trip designed to burnish his foreign policy credentials.

The White House subtly injected itself into Romney's trip on Thursday after Romney caused a stir by calling London's problems with Olympics preparation "disconcerting."

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama "has the utmost confidence" in Britain's ability to host the games.

Obama planned to continue competing with Romney for attention during the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games, which Romney was scheduled to attend while in London. Romney led the organizing committee for the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City.

The Obama campaign was airing an ad for American audiences during the opening ceremonies featuring Obama promoting his middle-class political pitch.

"I believe that the way you grow the economy is from the middle out," Obama says in the ad, echoing a standard campaign refrain. "I believe in fighting for the middle class because if they are prospering, all of us will prosper."

With the ad, Obama guarantees himself a presence during opening ceremonies despite the free media Romney might get by being there in person.
